Suggested Materials: 1 inch 3-ring binder (no spiral notebooks, please), No.2 pencils, graph paper, notebook paper. Please contact the teacher if assistance is required.
2. Course Description
By the end of grade eight, students will understand various numerical representations, including square roots, exponents and scientific notation; use and apply geometric properties of plane figures, including congruence and the Pythagorean theorem; use symbolic algebra to represent situations and solve problems, especially those that involve linear relationships; solve linear equations, systems of linear equations and inequalities; use equations, tables and graphs to analyze and interpret linear functions; use and understand set theory and simple counting techniques; determine the theoretical probability of simple events; and make inferences from statistical data, particularly data that can be modeled by linear functions.
3. Grading Scheme
Grades will be based on classwork, homework, check ups, quizzes, partner quizzes, unit tests, and projects.
Course grade will be based on the following weights:
Class work/ homework: 10%
Quizzes: 40%
Tests: 50%
4. Practice Expectations Students are expected to review notes daily in preparation for class. Specific practice assignments will typically be given four to five times a week, most often due the following day. Practice must be legible and properly identified. STUDENTS MUST SHOW WORK FOR CREDIT. Practice constitutes a portion of the overall average and should be completed consistently.
5. Provision for Improving Grades a.) Students who have low (73 or below) or failing cumulative grades may ask for the teacher for opportunities to improve their grade when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance. b.)Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
6. Scheduled Help Sessions Help sessions are available by appointment either before school or after school. Please see the teacher to make arrangements at least 24 hours in advance.
7. Teacher/Parent Communication Progress reports will be sent home every 4 ½ weeks, with a report card issued at the end of the semester. The teacher may contact the parent(s)/guardian regarding specific academic or behavioral performance during the semester. Parents are strongly encouraged to utilize Home Access Center to monitor their student’s grades. E-mail is the best method of communication. If email is unavailable, please send a note with your student.
Students are expected to record assignments in their agendas. Please review your student’s agenda on a daily basis. Should questions, comments or concerns arise; please contact the teacher by email or send a note with the student to provide to their teacher.
NOTE: To be included in wide distribution emails concerning classroom updates please email your child’s teachers. Send a blank email to the appropriate teacher with your child’s full name and the period they have math in the subject line.
8. Absence Make-Up Procedures Each student is responsible for making up work missed due to absence. For information regarding missed class time, contacting a responsible classmate is strongly suggested. Students are responsible for any missed work. The student must complete make-up work in a timely manner.
9. “Academic Honesty” means performing all academic work without plagiarism, cheating, lying, tampering, stealing, giving or receiving unauthorized assistance from any other person, or using any source of information that is not common knowledge without properly acknowledging the source.”
